Duane Vanderwerf

Duane Vanderwerf has worked with SGA on numerous projects during the course of his professional career, and one thing remains the same:  his reliance on SGA as an event partner to help him maximize the success of his events. From huge projects that fill McCormick Place Convention Center to purpose-built risers like the one you see above, he is constantly pushing us to new limits in enhancing the audience experience. We’d like to thank Duane for his continued support, and are proud to share his impact story.

(Chicago, IL)  Our client requested that the General Session risers be close to the stage for an intimate feeling to the room.  However, the challenge came when the agenda required that a midweek banquet take place in the same room, and the riser system was now about 40' too close to the stage.

At this point I turned to SGA for help to create a solution that would allow us to have the opening and closing General Session risers close to the stage, while also having the banquet in the same room.

The solution was creating several tiered, flat risers that could hold banquet rounds or theatre seating depending on the meeting, then put the whole thing on wheels and roll it to the second position.

This was a very large system for 1000 people and SGA calculated the friction of the wheels on the carpet to determine how this could work. They created a plan for the riser to break into four sections and roll in 4 steps. When it was all done, it took only 1.5 hours to reposition the entire system, and then move back for the  closing session.

Thanks to SGA, it worked great, and our client was very happy that they had the risers for both functions and close to the stage.  -Duane Vanderwerf
